MARIGOT--L'Agence Nationale des Fréquences (ANFR) reminds the public that certain types of cordless phones, specifically those designated Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunications (DECT) phones do not conform to European norms and cannot be used in St. Martin and St. Barths
The types of phones in question are named DECT 6.0 which originate from Canada or the USA and work on frequencies not authorised by the European Union. These cordless phones interfere with the frequencies of mobile phone networks.
Persons using these phones must discontinue using them. Use of this phone can incur a tax penalty of 450 euros and persistent interfering of a frequency can land the user with a six-month prison sentence and a 30,000-euro fine, according to article L.39-1 of the code of electronic communications.
ANFR advises consumers wishing to purchase a DECT cordless phone to make sure the stamp Community European (CE) is mentioned on the packaging and on the phone itself.
